emma's story
item2a2a1

Emma was also born to a refugee family. His father died when Emma was young, and his mother was too poor to care for his needs and to send him to school. In 1994 after the genocide, his mother sent him back to Rwanda, in hopes that an uncle could pay his tuition for school.

This uncle ended up abusing Emma and forced him to work as a house servant, not permitting him to attend school. Emma asked his uncle again and again when he could go to school, but Emma only recieved empty promises.

Emma began attending a local church and found solace and joy in learning to play the keyboard. He would spend every waking hour at the church when he was not doing chores at home.

His uncle's wife became extremely angry that Emma had another interest in his life other than working at home, so she forbade him to return to church. Emma's heart was broken and torn between serving God, and serving his uncle.

One day after Emma returned from church, his uncle's wife said very hurtful things to Emma, condemming him and his family. Emma ran out of the house and into a banana plantation to sit and cry. He remembered his whole life and wondered how he could have ended up this way with no hope for the future. He cried and prayed for an hour. Then he heard a voice speak to him, saying, "Emma, leave this family and follow me. Trust me and I will lead you into your future."

Emma was young in his faith and had never experienced anything like this, so he felt confused and afraid. He did not have the courage to leave the only house he knew. What if he suffered miserably and had to return? What would his uncle do to him then? But becaused he believed God, at the age of 14, he made the very difficult decision to leave his home. Like Abraham, he didn't know where he was going.

He went straight to the church where he found a woman who was willing to take him in for awhile. Then within a year, he was introduced to Africa New Life Ministries, and met Tony and Serena Morones, who found him a sponsor. Through ANLM he started attending school and began living an abundant life. God even gave him a wonderful family to live with in Kigali.

Today, Emma continues to enjoy his passion of serving God through playing the keyboard for both Hindurwa and for New Life Bible Church in Kigali.
